This is a sketch I drew first with graphite, then painted with regular watercolor and inktense, washed over with a wet brush. I made it, signed it, photographed it, uploaded it and posted it, as is true of ALL art on this blog from the beginning. It is 8 x 11 inch paper. Copyrighted.
This is a second encaustic sketch I made today. I posted the first of today on one of my twitters at https://twitter.com/gloriapoole. Encaustic means that wax is the binder. I was experimenting with making encaustic using a book I bought long ago, titled "Formulas for Painters", but since I am adverse to chemicals, I sort of follow the recipes and then experiment with substituting household items that are more along line of foodstuffs than chemicals. In the sketches I made today, I melted wax with solvent in a double boiler on the stove, then scraped chalk to make pigment, then ground the pigment into the melted wax. Then I painted with a palette knife. I am trying to find a style that works with encaustics so I made 4 sketches today with this same technique. I named this sketch "the burning bush" referencing the Bible story in which GOD spoke to Moses from a burning bush. [Exodus 3:2 through to 4:18, KJV]. I think encaustics requires a re-interpretation of my technique because it requires really fast motion because the wax cools almost instantly, and it requires painting with a palette knife and not a brush. So, the sketches I have made with encaustic so far, as sort of rough. But I am improving slightly with this technique. I also made encaustic before by putting a tiny palette knife on a soldering iron and melting the wax onto the surface itself and then spreading it quickly with hot tip of palette knife tip. I am not making encaustic my main way to make art--just experimenting with various mediums and techniques. Copyrighted.

This is my selfie in spring 2014 but I look the same except thinner and my hair is longer. I still put my hair in lop-sided pony-tail when I walkabout or paint to prevent hair from getting into my eyes, or into my paints or inks.
